IRB Updates

Key Points:
IRB Review required for 1) Research: designed to contribute to generalizable knowledge (journals, conferences, dissertations, etc.) and 2) Human subjects: involves living human subjects involving a) intervention or interaction, b) identifiable private information
Only faculty or staff can be PIs due to liability
Two types of applications: 1) Minimal review (meets "exempt" criteria), 2) Expedited or Full review
IRB doesn't request permission letters, just asks whether you've got them
If getting funding, ask Boyd for which category of exemption applies
"Just in time" IRB applications are okay; for example, If you won't pursue project if funding doesn't come through, you can just do a brief IRB submission to satisfy funder; just know no data collection can begin until approval
IRB would like to see certificates of IRB training for all key personnel, if possible
UNT Libraries have a good consent notice for online data collection
It is acceptable to combine Consent Form with HIPAA authorization
