UNT's ultimate goal is to have faculty at 100% externally funded Research with buyouts for Instruction
Grants can be used to earn summer salary, which is paid at higher rate than teaching
Denise Simmons (former NIH) and Rick Nader (former NSF) help with proposal development
Contact Jose Grimaldo at Research office early with sponsor, RFP, deadline, and which program so he can assign a Grant Officer
Research office can help with collaborations, sub-contracts, intellectual property, proposal reviews, etc.
Facilities & Administration (F&A) or Indirect Costs (IDC) reflect the overhead cost of doing business
Recognition Amounts and IDC Allocations are scored, so need to reflect effort indicated in the proposal
Include 3% increase each year for multi-year proposals
Only include cost share if required; "window dressing" does not improve proposal competitiveness
If wish to partner with industry/corporation (which is encouraged), contact Research office; UNT does not do "work for hire"
Use internal PEST grant to visit program officers
If you're interested in a limited submission, contact Jose Grimaldo as these are often held as internal competitions
Ask for what you need in a proposal; "be successful, not cheap"; 6 of 8 UNT proposals were declined for being too low
