IRB Updates
IRB Review required for 1) Research: designed to contribute to generalizable knowledge (journals, conferences, dissertations, etc.) and 2) Human subjects: involves living human subjects involving a) intervention or interaction, b) identifiable private information
Only faculty or staff can be PIs due to liability
Two types of applications: 1) Minimal review (meets "exempt" criteria), 2) Expedited or Full review
IRB doesn't request permission letters, just asks whether you've got them
If getting funding, ask Boyd for which category of exemption applies
"Just in time" IRB applications are okay; for example, If you won't pursue project if funding doesn't come through, you can just do a brief IRB submission to satisfy funder; just know no data collection can begin until approval
IRB would like to see certificates of IRB training for all key personnel, if possible
UNT Libraries have a good consent notice for online data collection
It is acceptable to combine Consent Form with HIPAA authorization

New Faculty: Craft of Grant Writing
Contact Research Services early if you plan to pursue a grant, so they can provide appropriate guidance
RIG is intended as seed money for later pursuit of external funding
The Small Grant Program is an emergency grant for in-between intramural funding opportunities; requires match
PEST is for meeting with federal agency program officers to help develop relationships; requires match
The Provost has the Summer Faculty Grant program, which can be used in addition to Research intramural funding
Success in getting a grant is significantly correlated with the number of previous attempts; if you don't write a proposal, you won't get the $

NIH: Education and Research Opportunities
Interdisciplinarity between different fields is important in tackling biomedical problems.
Mandated NIH priorites include rare conditions, underfunded areas, and health disparities.
There are many student and faculty research opportunities at NIH's over 1250 labs
1-2 concise, specific AIMS are most important part of NIH application, along with Research Design

Only untenured faculty can apply
Of 2600 proposals in 2007, 458 were awarded (31% CISE, 14% SBE, 20% non research institutions)
Key is to target the right NSF Directorate/Division/Program; each has its own culture
At the core MUST BE integrated research and education plan
TxCDK has successful proposals to view in hard copy

NSF: Tackling NSF’s Broader Impacts
Informal Science Education (ISE) is an effective Broader Impact area
Museums make good partners for creating educational opportunities for public out of science
Check out NSF iTest grant opportunities for educational impact
Know your pedagogy; know the literature; go beyond the norm
Show how your work has been informed by what's already been done
